| Getting
better AirPort reception with your portable.
Going wireless is a great way to simplify your
home or office network, especially where laptops
are involved. Unfortunately sometimes the WiFi
range leaves a bit to be desired. Here are some
tips to help you get the most of your wireless
network.
1.
Check the location of the AirPort Base Station.
Place the base station in a good, clear, central
location where there is little or no interference.
2.
Use the Internet Connect application (or the AirPort
application in Mac OS 9) to make sure you have
good reception in the locations where connect
to the base station. If reception is bad, move
the base station until you get a good signal.
3.
Make sure the antennas on the computer are not
covered by your hands, books, or other objects
that could obstruct and interfere with reception.
4.
Rotating your computer might improve reception.
Rotate the computer until signal strength peaks
in the Internet Connect
application.
5.
Other devices can cause interference. Use the
AirPort Admin Utility to try a different channel
on the AirPort Base Station.
Less
than optimal wireless performance may be the result
of interference. Check around your computing environment
for devices and materials that might be sources.
Possible Sources of Interference:
• Microwave ovens.
•
Direct Satellite Service (DSS) RF leakage: The
coax cable that came with certain types of satellite
dishes may cause interference.
•
Certain electrical devices such a power lines,
electrical railroad tracks, and power stations.
•
2.4 GHz phones: A cordless telephone that operates
in this range may cause interference with AirPort.
•
Metal objects.
•
Any other devices that operate in the 2.4 GHz
bandwidth (microwaves, cameras, baby monitors,
etc.).
Using
AirPort Admin Utility you can sometimes overcome
interference by changing the wireless channel
on which you’re operating.
